Science compute ticker

The strip under the tagline on the Markets page shows how much computing power the main volunteer science networks are delivering right now, with the change over the last 24 hours. A stock ticker, but for science.

How the numbers are calculated

BOINC projects do not publish FLOPS. They publish credit, which BOINC defines so that a computer sustaining 1 GFLOPS earns 200 credits per day. So one credit per day is about 5 MFLOPS:

estimated FLOPS = recent average credit per day × 5,000,000

HeliEx reads each project's recent average credit (RAC) from its own public export: the BOINC server_status.php?xml=1 export (its "current floating point speed" is total RAC ÷ 200, in GFLOPS), PrimeGrid's status page ("Current TeraFLOPS", also RAC-based), or the daily stats export stats/user.gz, adding up every user's RAC. Einstein@Home publishes the same RAC-based figure in its own units.

Credit is a convention, not a hardware measurement, and projects award it differently, so BOINC figures are estimates and are marked with ≈ in the ticker. Figures a project reports itself have no mark.

Folding@home is not BOINC. It publishes its own x86 FLOPS figures, and HeliEx shows their total as reported.

Gridcoin share. When a Gridcoin-whitelisted project does not allow its own figure to be read, HeliEx uses the project's RAC from the latest Gridcoin superblock on its own Gridcoin node, converted with the same formula. That RAC counts only Gridcoin crunchers, not the whole project, so the ticker labels it "Gridcoin share" and the real project total is higher.

Updates

HeliEx samples every network once an hour (daily stats exports at most once a day) and the ticker refreshes every 5 minutes. The 24-hour change compares the latest sample with the one closest to 24 hours earlier; the small chart shows the last 24 hourly samples. A network without a fresh figure (none in the last 48 hours) is left off the ticker. Nothing is ever filled in or guessed.

HeliEx honours each site's robots.txt. Einstein@Home and LHC@home do not allow automated access to their status pages. Einstein@Home is shown with its Gridcoin share instead; LHC@home is not on the Gridcoin whitelist, so it is left off.

Data sources

"Gridcoin-whitelisted" adds up the networks on the Gridcoin project whitelist, read from Gridcoin's own listprojects on HeliEx's node (checked 9 October 2026). Folding@home is on that whitelist through Gridcoin's Folding@home bridge.

The same data is public at /api/public/science-compute (JSON, cached 5 minutes) and ?format=csv (last 30 days). See the API docs.

Disclosure

HeliEx lists GRC and its operator holds GRC. The ticker is information about science networks, not investment advice.
